Since both players and fans have had terrible experiences at MetLife Stadium in the past, it is no secret that the stadium is among the worst in the NFL.
However, a recent survey conducted by The Athletic among players revealed the true sentiments of players regarding the East Rutherford, New Jersey, stadium that serves as home to the New York Giants and Jets.
The poll’s results were unequivocal: MetLife Stadium received 18.4% of the vote, making it the worst NFL stadium overall.
FedEx Field, home of the Washington Commanders, finished second with 13.9%.
There were also specific complaints available in case the vote wasn’t sufficient.
MetLife’s “turf sucks and the whole place is lame,” one player complained, while another criticized the fan base.
“Horrible fans.” That place is awful in every way,” the player remarked.
First, players have a well-known opinion of MetLife Stadium’s turf, which is a result of numerous injuries sustained there over the years. In the NFL, there has been much debate over artificial turf versus real grass because studies have shown that players are more likely to sustain injuries on the former.
Although the Giants and Jets installed new turf in the stadium this season in response to complaints, the surface hasn’t received much praise.
Giants owner John Mara stated during the NFL meetings in March, “I envision a day, my hope is we can get to a day at some point in the future when we can have a grass field that we’re able to maintain with two different teams and all the other events we have.” “I believe we can eventually arrive there. It might be a hybrid product, for example.”
ACL tears suffered by Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard among other season-ending injuries on the field in 2023 prompted players to voice their concerns about changes to be made before the 2023 campaign began.
However, the 2010 opening of the $1.6 billion stadium also has its fan experience component. While the Giants have played it more cautiously, the Jets have tried over the years to incorporate various elements such as LED bracelets, fireworks, and more to help engage the fans in the stands.
Fans are aware that MetLife Stadium lacks the wow factor that more modern venues like Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas or SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles can provide, despite teams’ best efforts to increase attendance.
It seems that players who are traveling to play there also exhibit the same behavior.
